Not Battle City
#1
Dear lord, been feeling sick almost the entire week, but this Friday evening I finished up an old NES style game, Not Battle City (naming it as Kevin would), that I wrote right after making Loopz.

There are only six levels, and the difficulty ramping is fast. Can you beat it? I haven't managed to yet.

Edit: It's an assetless program, only source code. But when I pasted it into the post and copied it back into ned, the levels were all messed up. So I'm attaching the n7 file instead.

I've always had a lot of respect for game developers who make games without relying on ready made assets, ... no sprite sheets, no MP3/WAV files, no huge libraries of premade stuff. Just code, a bit of memory, and whatever the hardware can handle.

It really reminds me of the old-school days, when developers had to squeeze an entire game into a tiny cartridge with limited memory. Back then, every byte counted, and programmers had to be incredibly creative with what they had. Some of those old Atari-era games were basically built around the limitations of the hardware itself.

Well done, Marcus  Cool

Generating assets in code is an excuse for not having to start gimp and ragequit after five minutes.

This is great fun, but really difficult. Four tries so far, and I haven't managed to defeat the FIRST level, let alone the sixth. More practice needed I think - thanks for sharing......
